Alternate Nostril Breathing: A Useful Technique in Yoga
The art of doing yoga can prove to be complicated for those who do not have knowledge about such. However, once you take the time to learn the basics, you will be able to easily learn the techniques, such as the breathing exercises you should do. A good example of this would be the alternate nostril breathing technique, which is also known as Nadi Sodhana or Anuloma Viloma. This yogic breathing practice has been lauded by many because of its therapeutic and calming effect.
How to Do the Alternate Nostril Breathing Technique
First, with the use of your right thumb, have it pressed against the right nostril to have it closed. Follow it up with inhaling slowly through the left nostril. Relax and stop for a while. After that, have the left nostril closed using your ring finger and take off the thumb from your right nostril. Exhale and inhale from the right nostril, then pause. Again, press your thumb against the right nostril and begin breathing. Just do this alternately from 5 to 10 times but make sure to stay as relaxed as possible.
Benefits of Alternate Breathing Technique
For most of the people who are practicing the alternate breathing technique, one of the most commonly noted benefits is its ability to enhance the functions of the brain. By doing this breathing exercise, equal amounts of oxygen can be transported to both sides of the brain. This will prevent the rain from being dull, and hence, influencing clarity and focus.
As it improves the brain function, there is no wonder why it is able to improve your performance when doing yoga, which is why it is recommended to be done five minutes prior to your session. It is also responsible for the soothing of the nervous system, which will help to find your meditation groove. It will be helpful in regulating breathing and controlling your mind, allowing you to be more focused with your yoga routine.
More so, the benefits of alternate nostril breathing extend beyond yoga but still in relation with its ability to relax the body and the mind. For instance, it is believed to be a contributing factor in improving sleep patterns, which can be basically attributed to its ability to bring the mind at a calmer state. It allows you to get rid of the things you are worried about to bring you into slumber quicker. It is also known for being able to help in cleansing the lungs. When the alternate nostril breathing technique is done at least five minutes daily, the impurities and stale air found at the bottom of your lungs can be exterminated.
